DUI Checkpoints Gone Wrong

We found a lovely article from back in May describing a DUI checkpoint in action. The Hartford Courant reports on a DUI checkpoint that stopped nearly 1400 vehicles. How many DUI arrests?

Only two of the drivers were even tested for their blood alcohol content. Both were within the legal limit and were not arrested. There were 20 “arrests” (we suspect some of these were just tickets) and none of the arrests were for DUI. They were mostly for paperwork violations regarding licenses, registrations and insurance.

Berlin deputy chief Klett claims that “The whole point of the checkpoints … is to detect intoxicated drivers and get them off the roads.”

Assuming some of the vehicles had passengers, roughly 2000 people were subjected to warrantless search and seizure. Or perhaps we should say unwarranted.
